Restoring Dignity and Independence
In Uganda, the elderly population is one of the most vulnerable groups, often neglected and left to face life’s challenges with little support. Many elderly individuals have no reliable source of income, leaving them vulnerable to extreme poverty. Additionally, many of them suffer from chronic health issues or disabilities that severely limit their ability to live independently or participate fully in society. This isolation and lack of financial stability are further exacerbated for elderly women, who often face discrimination, particularly in inheritance matters, leaving them without property or resources to sustain themselves.
Furthermore, a growing number of elderly Ugandans have become caretakers for their grandchildren, whose parents have died, particularly from illnesses such as AIDS. This adds another layer of responsibility and financial strain to their already difficult circumstances. Mercy Hands Inc. is acutely aware of the challenges faced by the elderly and has designed programs specifically to support them. We provide financial assistance to meet their immediate needs, but our efforts don’t stop there.
We believe in empowering the elderly to regain their independence and dignity. Through our small business initiatives, we help them set up sustainable income-generating activities. From selling goods in local markets to starting small-scale farming projects, these businesses allow the elderly to support themselves and their families. By providing them with the tools and guidance to succeed, we ensure that they can live with dignity, free from the hardships of poverty. Our program aims not just to provide for the elderly but to empower them to become active participants in their communities once again.
